Black History Month
Black History Month is an annual
celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing
their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History
Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted
historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. During the
dawning of the twentieth century, it was widely presumed that people of African
descent had little history besides the subjugation of slavery. Credit for the
evolving awareness of the true place of Blacks in history can, in large part,
be bestowed upon Dr. Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950).
Since 1976, every U.S. president
has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other
countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also
devote a month to celebrating Black history.
The 2024 theme is 'African
Americans and the Arts' spanning the many impacts Black Americans have on
visual arts, music, cultural music, and more.
When we celebrate Black History
Month, we recognize, honor, and acknowledge the contributions and achievements of those who went before us.
